Description:
This course is designed to present a unified view of nuclear and particle physics at an introductory level. Topics covered will include particle accelerators and methods of detection, radioactive decay, description of the nuclear force, nuclear structure and reaction theory. The particle physics section of the course will emphasise the role of conservation laws in discussing the classification of hadron spectra. Other topics include the quark model, weak interactions and features of high energy collisions.

Assessment is based on performance in written assignments, laboratory work and final examination.

Prerequisite: M211 Quantum Theory.

Administrative information:
This is a 1 semester course (15 weeks). Between 10-14 hours of study per week is required. It is a 3 point course.
